New to Cloth?

Can I sample a nappy before buying?
We offer trial packs of our miosoft two-piece nappy or individual miosolo all-in-one nappies for you to purchase to try. This is a cost-effective way of trying out reusable nappies before committing to purchase more or a larger pack.
What are the benefits of using cloth nappies?
More and more parents today are choosing to use reusable nappies for their baby. Reusable nappies have many benefits, please see sections below for more details.
Better for you
You can save money by using reusable nappies and furthermore if your nappies are used on a second child. Even by using one reusable nappy a day in place of a disposable you can make significant financial savings.
Better for baby
Reusable nappies use super absorbent fabrics rather than chemical gels which can be found in disposable nappies. This can reduce nappy rash. Studies* have shown that your child is five times more likely to suffer from nappy rash if you use disposable nappies rather than reusables. This is due to the chemicals in disposable nappies evoking the feeling of dryness when in fact they are wet; thus leaving your nappy on longer between changes. Nappy rash can be caused by a number of things such as illness and diarrhoea, teething food allergies, reaction to baby products such as wipes and creams, and much more. Toddlers who wear cloth nappies are likely to potty train up to 6 months earlier** than their disposable wearing friends, which can aid their development and independence.
Better for the environment

Reusable nappies are up to 40% better for the environment than disposable nappies.†

Are cloth nappies easy to use?
Our nappies are the easiest reusable nappies to use. They are designed to be quick, compact and stylish made with fabrics that will wash efficiently and dry quickly. Once a nappy has been used, it can be stored dry in a nappy bucket until you are ready to put your load in the washing machine. Then you simply reach for a new Bambino Mio nappy when changing.
Are cloth nappies bulky?
Modern cloth nappies are less bulky than the older style nappies (terry towelling) and are slightly more bulky than disposable nappies. Our nappies rely on super absorbent fabric to absorb moisture rather than the chemicals which can be found in disposable nappies. When a disposable nappy is wet it will also swell up with the liquid therefore increasing in size.
How many cloth nappies do I need?
The number of reusable nappies you need will depend on several factors and whether you intend to use reusable nappies full-time or part-time. Some parents use reusables at home but choose to use disposable nappies when out and about. The other thing you will need to consider is how often you are going to wash your nappies as you will need to ensure you have enough to use when you have some in the washing machine. Normally, used nappies are washed every 2-3 days.

** According to anecdotal evidence babies who wear reusable nappies potty train up to 6 months earlier than babies who wear disposables.

I’ve just purchased some nappies, what should I do?
Before you begin using your nappies you need to ensure you have prewashed them at least once before use. Your nappies will become more absorbent after the first few washes. We recommend pre-washing your nappies up to 60°C (we recommend 40°C) using a non-biological washing detergent. Do not use fabric softener when washing as this can affect the absorbency of your nappies.
How often do I need to change cloth nappies?
Exactly the same amount as disposable nappies. Nappies should be checked and changed every 2-4 hours but it really does depend on your baby.
How long will my nappies last?
To get the best out of your nappies we recommend washing regularly at 40°C with one scoop of miofresh nappy cleanser and air drying them. Washing regularly at higher temperatures and frequent tumble drying can result in premature deterioration of your nappies. Please see the ‘WASHING & DRYING’ section of this page to find more information about washing and drying your Bambino Mio nappies.
Can I use cloth nappies overnight?
Absolutely! Reusable nappies are just as reliable as disposables and are great to use when your baby starts sleeping through the night. Our miosolo all-in-one nappy has had great overnight reviews with some parents claiming it has lasted “12 hours overnight with NO LEAKS!!” If you wish to use your nappies overnight you will need to make some adjustments to your day time nappy in order to handle the 8-10 sleeping hours. A mioboost (nappy booster pad) is the perfect addition to any reusable nappy to maximise absorbency overnight.
What do I do when I’m out and about?
Pack your change bag with everything you need for your trip out including enough nappies. When you’re changing your baby, simply store your used nappies in your waterproof wet nappy bag. When you get home you can transfer them into your nappy bucket or pop them straight into the washing machine. Simple!
How will nappy liners help me?
Nappy liners help prevent heavy soiling of your nappies. Once your baby is ready for a nappy change, simply lift off the nappy liner and dispose.**
What are birth to potty nappies?
We have two types of birth to potty nappies; miosolo all-in-one nappy and miosoft two-piece nappy. They are both onesize† designed to fit from birth through to potty training age. The term ‘birth to potty’ is an indication of the sizing of our nappies and not how long they will last.
* Take care that you have purchased the correct product as washed nappies purchased from us cannot be replaced/refunded. ** mioliners can be composted when wet or thrown away. † True for most, but due to the wide range of babies’ shapes and sizes, this cannot be guaranteed.

Washing & Drying

How should I dry my nappies?

We recommend air drying your nappies away from direct heat. Your nappies may be tumble dried on a low/cold setting. However, continuous tumble drying and contact with direct heat may cause your nappies to prematurely deteriorate and can reduce the performance of your nappies. Do not iron your nappies. Remember, if you are using the miosolo all-in-one nappy to pull out the absorbent core from inside the nappy as this will help it dry quicker!

How can I remove stains & odours?
Due to the nature of our products, we cannot guarantee that staining can be completely prevented. However, using miofresh nappy cleanser regularly can help prevent the staining of your nappies. We recommend adding one scoop (15mL) of miofresh your washing detergent drawer in every wash. Alternatively, if staining occurs you can soak your nappies in a hand hot solution of miofresh for at least 2 hours. Use 30mL of miofresh for every 5 litres of water. After soaking, wash in the washing machine at 40°C and give your nappies an additional rinse afterwards. Please note: you must ONLY soak the core of your nappies in this solution, keeping the laminated outer fabric out of the soaking solution. Bambino Mio cannot be responsible for any deterioration to the products after incorrect soaking.

What is strip washing?
Strip washing is something which is mentioned on many websites and forums. Over time there may be a build up of washing detergent or residual bacteria in your reusable nappies resulting in a strong smell of ammonia and/or reduced absorbency. If this is the case you will need to strip wash your nappies to restore the absorbency to optimum performance and comfort. You may also want to strip wash your reusable nappies if you have purchased pre-loved nappies or have received them second hand. A standard washing detergent when used on its own is not designed to kill bacteria. To prevent a build up we recommend you regularly use a nappy cleanser such as miofresh which is designed to clean, freshen and deodorise your reusable nappies at low temperatures.
How should I store my nappies?
Use a nappy bucket to store your used nappies before washing. There is no need to soak your nappies, simply store them dry in your nappy bucket until you are ready to wash. When washing day arrives, lift the laundry bag out of the bucket and transfer into the washing machine. Nappies will wash within the laundry bag so there is no need to handle dirty nappies.
How should I wash my nappies?
You must remove any excess soiling before washing your nappies. We recommend washing your nappies at 40°C using the recommended amount of non-biological washing detergent. Do not use fabric softener when washing as this can affect the absorbency of your nappies. Please note that bright colours may fade over time. "We recommend adding one scoop (15mL) of miofresh nappy cleanser to your washing detergent drawer. This will help freshen and deodorise your nappies whilst washing. "

The amount of detergent you use depends on your load size so if your washing machine is not full you may need to use less detergent. Remember, if your products have hook and loop style tabs, fold back the laundry tabs to protect them in the wash! To get the best out of your nappies we recommend washing regularly at 40°C with one scoop of miofresh nappy cleanser and air drying them. Washing regularly at higher temperatures and frequent tumble drying can result in premature deterioration of your nappies.

What do I need to know about detergents?
There are two different types of detergents; biological washing detergent and non-biological (enzyme free) washing detergent. Non-biological detergents have less prospect of irritating the skin; the enzymes, optical brighteners and synthetic fragrances which can be found in biological washing detergents are used to speed up the chemical reaction and help remove stains, make whites appear brighter and fabric smell fresher. Enzymes, optical brighteners and synthetic fragrances can remain in the fabric after washing which can cause irritation to skin and some to have an allergic reaction. If your baby is particularly sensitive you may need to rinse your nappies several times to ensure the optical brighteners and synthetic fragrances are completely removed. Alternatively, use a non-biological detergent which is free from these things. Not all non-biological (enzyme free) detergents are the same. They are all designed to wash clothes, but no two brands are identical. Some brands will have different methods of producing washing detergents in large volumes at lower costs, this doesn't necessarily mean that the best wash is obtained from a big brand detergent. However, in the case of reusable nappy washing, more specialist products can provide more absorbency and less irritation for your baby as well as great stain removal. Our miocare washing powder is an environmentally friendly washing powder which is ideal for baby's sensitive skin and allows you to wash effectively at lower temperatures.
What is miofresh?
Miofresh is our environmentally friendly and biodegradable nappy cleanser. It contains antibacterial agents to perfectly clean and fresh your nappies at lower temperatures and is essential for your regular nappy washing routine. Miofresh contains no enzymes, synthetic perfumes, chlorine bleaches or optical brighteners found in conventional nappy cleansers. We recommend adding one scoop (15mL) of miofresh to your washing detergent drawer in every wash. Click to find out more about miofresh.

Performance & Fit

My nappies are leaking, why?

There are a number of reasons why you could be experiencing nappy leakage:

a) Are you changing often enough? You need to change your reusable nappy every 2-4 hours just like a disposable. As your baby gets bigger you may find you need to change your nappy more regularly.

b) Are you using a nappy liner? Ensure that your nappy liner lays flat on top of your nappy and do not fold the nappy liner to create a double layer.

c) Are you using any nappy creams? We recommend you only used water-based creams when using reusable nappies as the oils in the product can reduce the absorbency of your nappies. If using a water-based nappy cream, only apply a thin layer and always use a nappy liner.

d) Have your nappies been prepared correctly? Have you prewashed your nappies at least once before you have started using them? Check that the absorbent core is lying flat inside the miosolo all-in-one nappy. Ensure that you are using the correct size miosoft two-piece nappy and that it has been folded correctly. Click for miosoft two-piece nappy user guide.

e) The fit of your nappies may need to be adjusted. If your nappies feel too tight or loose they may need adjusting. Treat your nappies like a piece of clothing, it should not be too tight nor too loose. Please ensure you are using the correct size of nappy. If you are using the miosolo all-in-one nappy you can use the poppers to adjust the length of the nappy and angle the hook and loop fastenings to change the size of the leg holes to suit your baby. If you are using the miosoft two-piece nappy ensure your onesize nappy is folded correctly and your baby is in the correct size nappy cover. Click for user guide.

Please ensure that the nappies fit snugly against your baby’s legs and tummy. By adjusting the angle of the hook and loop tabs you can alter the size of the leg openings to make them bigger or smaller.

If using the miosoft two-piece nappy check that the nappy is completely tucked inside the nappy cover at the waist and leg openings.

f) Your nappies may not have enough absorbency. As your baby grows you may need to add more absorbency to your nappies. Adding a nappy booster is a great way to maximise the absorbency of your nappies. If you have tried a mioboost (nappy booster) and this is not working, you may need to restore your nappies to their original absorbency by "strip washing" them. Please see the 'WASHING & DRYING' section of this page to see more information about strip washing your Bambino Mio nappies.
