New to Cloth?

What are the benefits of using cloth diapers?
More and more parents today are choosing to use cloth diapers for their baby. Cloth diapers have many benefits, please see sections below for more details.
Better for baby
Cloth diapers use super absorbent fabrics rather than chemical gels which can be found in disposable diapers. This can reduce diaper rash. Studies* have shown that your child is five times more likely to suffer from diaper rash if you use disposable diapers rather than cloth. This is due to the chemicals in disposable nappies evoking the feeling of dryness when in fact they are wet; thus leaving your diaper on longer between changes. Diaper rash can be caused by a number of things such as illness and diarrhoea, teething food allergies, reaction to baby products such as wipes and creams, and much more. Toddlers who wear cloth diapers are likely to potty train up to 6 months earlier** than their disposable wearing friends, which can aid their development and independence.
Better for the environment

Cloth diapers are up to 40% better for the environment than disposable diapers.†

Better for the environment
Are cloth diapers easy to use?
Our diapers are the easiest cloth diapers to use. They are designed to be quick, compact and stylish and made with fabrics that will wash efficiently and dry quickly. Once diaper has been used, it can be stored dry in a diaper pail until you are ready to put your load in the washing machine. Then you simply reach for a new Bambino Mio diaper when changing.
Are cloth diapers bulky?
Modern cloth diapers are less bulky than the older style diapers (terry cloth) and are slightly more bulky than disposable diapers. Our diapers rely on super absorbent fabric to absorb moisture rather than the chemicals which can be found in disposable diapers. When a disposable diaper is wet it will also swell up with the liquid therefore increasing in size.
How many cloth diapers do I need?
The number of cloth diapers you need will depend on several factors and whether you intend to use cloth diapers full-time or part-time. Some parents use cloth at home but choose to use disposable diapers when out and about. The other thing you will need to consider is how often you are going to wash your diapers as you will need to ensure you have enough to use when you have some in the washing machine. Normally, used diapers are washed every 2-3 days.
Can I sample a diaper before buying?
We offer trial packs of our miosoft two-piece diaper or individual miosolo all-in-one diapers for you to purchase to try. This is a cost-effective way of trying out cloth diapers before committing to purchase more or a larger pack.
Better for you
You can save lots of $$$ using cloth diapers and furthermore if your diapers are used on a second child. Even by using one cloth diaper a day in place of a disposable you can make significant financial savings.

** According to anecdotal evidence babies who wear cloth diapers potty train up to 6 months earlier than babies who wear disposables.

Using

I’ve just purchased some diapers, what should I do?
Before you begin using your diapers you need to ensure you have prewashed* them at least once before use. Your diapers will become more absorbent after the first few washes. We recommend pre-washing your diapers up to 140°F (we recommend 104°F) using a non-biological washing detergent. Do not use fabric softener when washing as this can affect the absorbency of your diapers.
How often do I need to change cloth diapers?
Exactly the same amount as disposable diapers. Diapers should be checked and changed every 2-4 hours but it really does depend on your baby.
How long will my diapers last?
To get the best out of your diapers we recommend washing regularly at 104°F with one scoop of miofresh diaper cleanser and air drying them. Washing regularly at higher temperatures and frequent tumble drying can result in premature deterioration of your diapers. Please see the ‘WASHING & DRYING’ section of this page to find more information about washing and drying your Bambino Mio diapers.
Are my products covered by a guarantee?
All Bambino Mio products are covered by a 12 month guarantee from date of purchase. Bambino Mio will replace any product within a 12 month period that it considers faulty and has been cared for correctly and deemed not to have experienced problems due to general use. For full details about our product guarantee see our Terms & Conditions under 'PRODUCTS.'
Can I use cloth diapers overnight?
Absolutely! Cloth diapers are just as reliable as disposables and are great to use when your baby starts sleeping through the night. Our miosolo all-in-one diaper has had great overnight reviews with some parents claiming it has lasted “12 hours overnight with NO LEAKS!!” If you wish to use your diapers overnight you will need to make some adjustments to your day time diaper in order to handle the 8-10 sleeping hours. A mioboost (diaper booster pad) is the perfect addition to any cloth diaper to maximize absorbency overnight.
What do I do when I’m out and about?
Pack your diaper bag with everything you need for your trip out including enough diapers. When you’re changing your baby, simply store your used diapers in your waterproof wet diaper bag. When you get home you can transfer them into your diaper pail or pop them straight into the washing machine. Simple!
How will diaper liners help me?
Diaper liners help prevent heavy soiling of your diapers. Once your baby is ready for a diaper change, simply lift off the diaper liner and dispose.**
What are birth to potty diapers?
We have two types of birth to potty diapers; miosolo all-in-one diaper and miosoft two-piece diaper. They are both onesize† designed to fit from birth through to potty training age. The term ‘birth to potty’ is an indication of the sizing of our diapers and not how long they will last.
* Take care that you have purchased the correct product as washed diapers purchased from us cannot be replaced/refunded. ** Soiled liners can be flushed one at a time. Wet liners can be disposed of in the rubbish bin. Caution: flushing of liners may cause blockage in old or damaged drains. No responsibility can be accepted for individual drain systems. † True for most, but due to the wide range of babies’ shapes and sizes, this cannot be guaranteed.

Washing & Drying

How should I store my diapers?
Use a diaper pail to store your used diapers before washing. There is no need to soak your diapers, simply store them dry in your diaper pail until you are ready to wash. When laundry day arrives, lift the laundry bag out of the pail and transfer into the washing machine. Diapers will wash within the laundry bag so there is no need to handle dirty diapers.
How should I wash my diapers?

It is important that you wash all Bambino Mio products in accordance with the washing instructions on the individual garment label. You must remove any excess soiling before washing your diapers. We recommend washing your diapers at 104°F using the recommended amount of non-biological laundry detergent. Do not use fabric softener when washing as this can affect the absorbency of your diapers. Please note that bright colors may fade over time. "We recommend adding one scoop (1 oz) of miofresh diaper cleanserto your laundry detergent drawer. This will help freshen and deodorize your diapers while washing. "

To get the best out of your diapers we recommend washing regularly at 104°F with one scoop of miofresh diaper cleanser and air drying them. Washing regularly at higher temperatures and frequent tumble drying can result in premature deterioration of your diapers.

What is miofresh?
Miofresh is our environmentally friendly and biodegradable diaper cleanser. It contains antibacterial agents to perfectly clean and freshen your diapers at lower temperatures and is essential for your regular diaper washing routine. Miofresh contains no enzymes, synthetic perfumes, chlorine bleaches or optical brighteners found in conventional diaper cleansers. We recommend adding one scoop (1 oz) of miofresh to your laundry detergent drawer in every wash. Click to find out more about miofresh.
How should I dry my diapers?
We recommend air drying your diapers away from direct heat. Your diapers may be tumble dried on a low/cold setting. However, continuous tumble drying and contact with direct heat may cause your diapers to prematurely deteriorate and can reduce the performance of your diapers. Do not iron your diapers. Remember, if you are using the miosolo all-in-one diaper to pull out the absorbent core from inside the diaper as this will help it dry quicker!
What do I need to know about detergents?
There are two different types of detergents; biological laundry detergent and non-biological (enzyme free) laundry detergent. Non-biological detergents have less prospect of irritating the skin; the enzymes, optical brighteners and synthetic fragrances which can be found in biological laundry detergents are used to speed up the chemical reaction and help remove stains, make whites appear brighter and fabric smell fresher. Enzymes, optical brighteners and synthetic fragrances can remain in the fabric after washing which can cause irritation to skin and some to have an allergic reaction. If your baby is particularly sensitive you may need to rinse your diapers several times to ensure the optical brighteners and synthetic fragrances are completely removed. Alternatively, use a non-biological detergent which is free from these things. Not all non-biological (enzyme free) detergents are the same. They are all designed to wash clothes, but no two brands are identical. Some brands will have different methods of producing laundry detergents in large volumes at lower costs, this doesn't necessarily mean that the best wash is obtained from a big brand detergent. However, in the case of cloth diaper laundry, more specialist products can provide more absorbency and less irritation for your baby as well as great stain removal. Our miocare washing powder is an environmentally friendly washing powder which is ideal for baby's sensitive skin and allows you to wash effectively at lower temperatures.
How can I remove stains & odors?

Due to the nature of our products, we cannot guarantee that staining can be completely prevented. However, using miofresh diaper cleanser regularly can help prevent the staining of your diapers. We recommend adding one scoop (1 oz) of miofresh with your laundry detergent in every wash. Alternatively, if staining occurs you can soak your diapers in a hand hot solution of miofresh for at least 2 hours. Use 1 oz of miofresh for every 176 fl oz of water. After soaking, wash in the washing machine at 104°F and give your diapers an additional rinse afterwards. Please note: you must ONLY soak the core of your diapers in this solution, keeping the laminated outer fabric out of the soaking solution. Bambino Mio cannot be responsible for any deterioration to the products after incorrect soaking.

What is strip washing?
Strip washing is something which is mentioned on many websites and forums. Over time there may be a build up of laundry detergent or residual bacteria in your cloth diapers resulting in a strong smell of ammonia and/or reduced absorbency. If this is the case you will need to strip wash your diapers to restore the absorbency to optimum performance and comfort. You may also want to strip wash your cloth diapers if you have purchased pre-loved diapers or have received them second hand. A standard washing detergent when used on its own is not designed to kill bacteria. To prevent a build up we recommend you regularly use a diaper cleanser such as miofresh which is designed to clean, freshen and deodorize your cloth diapers at low temperatures.
How do I strip wash my diapers?
To eliminate odors and restore absorbency and softness you can strip wash cloth diapers occasionally (every 4-5 months). Simply soak your diapers in a hand hot solution of miofresh for at least 2 hours (1 oz of miofresh for every 176 fl oz of water). After soaking, wash in the laundry machine at 104°F and give your diapers an additional rinse afterwards. Air dry in strong sunlight where possible. Note: For miosolo all-in-one diaper only soak the core of the diaper keeping the laminated fabric out of the soaking solution and do not soak miosoft diaper covers.

Performance & Fit

My diapers are leaking, why?

There are a number of reasons why you could be experiencing diaper leakage:

a) Are you changing often enough? You need to change your cloth diaper every 2-4 hours just like a disposable. As your baby gets bigger you may find you need to change your diaper more regularly.

b) Are you using a diaper liner? Ensure that your diaper liner lays flat on top of your diaper and do not fold the diaper liner to create a double layer.

c) Are you using any diaper creams? We recommend you only used water-based creams when using cloth diapers as the oils in the product can reduce the absorbency of your diapers. If using a water-based diaper cream, only apply a thin layer and always use a diaper liner.

d) Have your diapers been prepared correctly? Have you prewashed your diapers at least once before you have started using them? Check that the absorbent core is lying flat inside the miosolo all-in-one diaper. Ensure that you are using the correct size miosoft two-piece diaper and that it has been folded correctly. Click for miosoft two-piece diaper user guide.

e) The fit of your diapers may need to be adjusted. If your diapers feel too tight or loose they may need adjusting. Treat your diapers like a piece of clothing, they should not be too tight or too loose. If you are using the miosolo all-in-one diaper you can use the snaps to adjust the length of the diaper and angle the hoop and look to change the size of the leg holes to suit your baby. If you are using the miosoft two-piece diaper ensure your onesize diaper is folded correctly and your baby is in the correct size diaper cover Click for user guide.

Please ensure that the diapers fit snugly against your baby’s legs and tummy. By adjusting the angle of the hook and loop tabs you can alter the size of the leg openings to make them bigger or smaller.

If using the miosoft two-piece diaper check that the diaper is completely tucked inside the diaper cover at the waist and leg openings.

f) Your diapers may not have enough absorbency. As your baby grows you may need to add more absorbency to your diapers. Adding a diaper booster is a great way to maximize the absorbency of your diapers. If you have tried a mioboost (diaper booster) and this is not working, you may need to restore your diapers to their original absorbency by “strip washing” them. Please see the ‘WASHING & DRYING’ section of this page to see more information about strip washing your Bambino Mio diapers.
